In recent years several canker fungi have caused damage, and even death, of large madrone trees in urban areas. Three pathogens most likely to cause tree death are a root rot ( Phytophthora cactorum ) , Arbutus canker ( Nattrassia mangiferae ) and madrone canker ( Fusicoccum aesculi ).
